If you are a looking for a fun, family friendly, relaxed and truly Kiwi experience with entertainment, shopping and culinary delights, then The Westport Whitebait Festival is the perfect event for you! Westport is the heart of the Buller District at the top of the stunning West Coast of the South Island. Whether you are visiting from overseas or you reside in NZ we are certain you will enjoy this festival. And why not stay a while? There are so many other unique and world class things to see, do and enjoy around the Buller district and the whole West Coast. It’s a great get away for the long weekend! Many of the stalls are fundraising for local schools, sports teams and community organisations as well as local crafts people & professional artists, there is a great mix of market stalls. Main street retailers stay open late with many offering special sales and stalls in honour of the event. This year’s event will see the addition of various entertainment hubs along the main street. There will once again be an area for youth with various activities, music and entertainment. The popular main entertainment stage will again be outside Westport’s iconic Clock-tower with a range of fabulous local bands and entertainers from around New Zealand. The Whitebait Cook- off was extremely popular last year, the crowd watches as local, professional chefs go head to head in preparing a delicious and innovative whitebait dish to impress the judges. As an incentive, they have the chance to win the sought after Whitebait Cook-off trophy. Following the cook-off is the Whitebait Filleting Competition. This is another highlight of the festival which can get very competitive and is sure to provide spectators and participants with lots of laughs.
